Technology and Social Cohesion

The tech sector wields enormous power over the thoughts and actions of billions of people. Toxic polarization stymies governments from helping to solve pressing problems from Covid to the climate crisis. Humanity needs technology that builds trust and civic health rather than outrage and division, and people who understand how to build bridges in divided communities to be better equipped to use technology. In 2023, Toda Peace Institute joined with other organisations to launch the Council for Technology and Social Cohesion. The organisation aims to unite sectors worldwide to harness technology for social cohesion, civic trust, and peace in conflict-affected communities, bringing together technologists, civic organizations, peacebuilders, academics, policy influencers, and investors. The priority is understanding tech’s effects on people in conflict-affected communities, aiming to stop online harms triggering real-world violence. The distinct focus on social cohesion is complementary yet distinct from other initiatives on disinformation, privacy, and trust and safety. The Council proposes practical approaches at the platform and governance level so that technology can strengthen trust and civic health.
