Toda Institute is proud to announce the publication of our journal Peace & Policy vol. 15, entitled Music and Solidarity: Questions of Universality, Consciousness and Connection, co-edited by Dr. Felicity Laurence and Dr. Olivier Urbain.  In addition we anticipate the publication of a book by Transaction Publishers with the same title later this year.  Please review our publications page for more information about other Toda Institute Publications.

The Toda Institute is pleased to announce that on October 1, 2009, Professor Kevin Clements became Secretary General of the Toda Institute for Global Peace and Policy Research. Dr. Clements is the Foundation Chair of Peace and Conflict Studies and Director of the New Zealand Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Otago, Dunedin New Zealand. He is also Secretary General of the International Peace Research Association. Prior to taking up these positions he was the Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies and Foundation Director of the Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Queensland, Brisbane Australia. He was Secretary General of International Alert from 1999-2003 and earlier Professor and Director of ICAR, George Mason University. His career has been a combination of academic analysis and practice in the areas of peacebuilding and conflict transformation. He has been an advisor to the New Zealand, Australian, British, Swedish and Dutch governments on conflict prevention, peace, defense and security issues. He has written or edited seven books and over 160 chapters/articles on conflict transformation, peacebuilding, preventive diplomacy and development with a specific focus on the Asia Pacific region. He will contribute to Toda Institute's research projects in the fields of conflict transformation, peacebuilding, human rights, sustainable developments, UN reform, and dialogue of civilizations. The Toda Institute is also happy to announce the promotion of Satoko Takahashi from Program Manager to Research Director. Dr. Takahashi has been with the Toda Institute since 1996 and her many contributions are deeply appreciated. We look forward to working with Dr. Takahashi, as Research Director, for years to come. We regret to inform you that Toda Institute’s Deputy Director, Mr. Tomosaburo Hirano, passed away in Tokyo on January 22, 2008 at 2:37 AM. We are eternally thankful for his many contributions to the Toda Institute for Global Peace and Policy Research over the years. He is dearly missed by all of us. We would like to invite you to prepare a short statement to be included in our online memorial. He was a member of the Board of Directors, the Deputy Director and the Research Director of the Toda Institute for Global Peace & Policy Research. He was an editorial writer for a Japanese Press for over 30 years, and also worked as a foreign correspondent by which he came into contact with and interviewed many prominent scholars in the world. In addition, he was also a recognized expert in the field of peace studies. He served as a visiting fellow at the Center for Science and International Affairs, at Harvard University in 1985, as well as a guest researcher at the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo, in 1989. He graduated from Takushoku University in Tokyo. He is survived by his wife, Atsuko, daughters Sachiko and Eiko, and son Mitsushiro. TOMOSABURO HIRANO MEMORIAL STATEMENTS I met Mr. Hirano in Cambridge, MA, for the first time. He was gentle and confident. He had come to ask me if I would accept the directorship of the Toda Institute, I said I would be honored. He stood by me throughout my directorship. He was always wise but never demanding. I consider it an honor to have served with him. He was an exceptional human being and will be deeply missed. Majid Tehranian, Director Toda Institute for Global Peace & Policy Research I have lost a dear friend. A long time ago, when explaining to me that in Japan you use the second name more often than we do here, he added "but you may call me "Tomo.” I took it as an honor, although I usually said Tomosaburo. My heart goes out to Satoko and Majid and all those at the Toda Institute who had the honor of working with Tomosaburo Hirano. He was a good man. I will miss him a lot. I remember him as a gracious host at numerous social gatherings and information briefings at the Institute's office. I came to value highly his quiet, passionate efforts in behalf of the realization of peace and justice in human affairs. He was an inspiration and will be missed by all of us who had the opportunity to know and work with him. He was always encouraging, supportive and often conveyed his ideas with a delightful dry sense of humour. He was totally committed to the Toda vision and to global peace. I valued his modesty, his insights and friendship. He impressed me as a superb and highly professional administrator on whom so many of us depended.
