Hugh Miall │ Toda Peace Institute Panel Discussion │ 20 Feb 2024
February 20, 2024
Prof. Hugh Miall discusses war and peace in Northeast Asia, and specifically a recent Toda Peace Institute workshop on understanding China and threats to peace in Northeast Asia. How can relations with China be improved? Is China in irredentist power? Or is it a defensive power? And what should we make of documents like the Global Security Initiative, which commits China to a vision of common comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security and respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states, and respecting the principles of the UN Charter, and calling for peaceful resolution of disputes? And how does that fit together with what looks like the expansion of maritime claims and activities in the South China Sea and expansion of nuclear forces?
This presentation was part of a Panel Discussion with an invited audience, recorded in Tokyo on 20 February 2024, and hosted by the Toda Peace Institute.
