Toda.eNewsletter #5
2 April 2009
Dear Friends of the Toda Institute and Members of TIAC,
We hope this message finds you in good spirits as we move into the second quarter of 2009. It has been some time since we sent out our last newsletter and we wanted to take a moment to keep you up to date on the Toda Institute. We have several pieces of good news to share with you and a small request. Please, read on…
New and Updated Toda Institute Website Launched!
We are happy to announce the completion of a new version of our website, which has been radically simplified and embellished. We need your help, however, to make it a truly outstanding site. We are particularly interested in adding links to like-minded organizations to our Links section http://www.toda.org/links/l_dialogue.html. If you would like us to consider your organization for our links section, please send us a short note indicating your interest, to chloe@toda.org. We look forward to receiving your suggestions.
Symposium: “The Alliance of Civilizations: Possible Pathways for Asia-Pacific.”
TIAC member Joseph Camilleri, Professor of International Relations, and Director of the Centre for Dialogue at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia, recently spent six days in Tokyo. He gave an inspiring keynote speech of the same title as the symposium, which was organized jointly by the Toda Institute and Soka University. (More details about this event in the next newsletter).
Western Economic Association International (WEAI) Pacific Rim Conference
It was also a great pleasure meeting and discussing with TIAC member Michael Intriligator, Professor of Economics, Political Science and Public Policy at the University of California in Los Angeles, USA. As the current president of the WEAI he was actively involved in their Pacific Rim Conference in Kyoto (24-27 March) and I thank him for his warm welcome and introduction to his colleagues.
PhD on Daisaku Ikeda's Philosophy of Peace
Granted by the Department of Peace Studies, University of Bradford, UK
The founder of the Toda Institute, Daisaku Ikeda, has published thousands of pages on peace and justice, including annual Peace Proposals since 1983. He has also produced about 50 dialogues in book form in which he shares his vision for a better future for humanity with prominent world figures. However, his name was virtually unknown in the field of Peace Studies, until the recent completion of a PhD thesis entitled Daisaku Ikeda's Philosophy of Peace (DIPP). This work is slated for publication later this year, and the manuscript has received positive reviews concerning its clarity, while Ikeda's ideas were praised for their originality and power to change society for the better. In the next eNewsletter, the links between the content of the DIPP thesis and the mission of the Toda Institute will be explored. In the meantime, feel free to write to us for more details.
With best regards on behalf of the Toda.eNewsletter team,
Olivier Urbain
